REVIEW: Poldark (Season 2, Episode 4) (PBS)

The current season of the sumptuous period drama Poldark is now simmering nicely on PBS – and it’s on tonight’s episode of the network’s Masterpiece series that we can return to eighteenth century Cornwall and, more to the point, twists, turns and tragedy for the world of Ross Poldark.

In many ways, things are looking up for the Poldark family in this episode. We will try our best to keep spoilers to a minimum, but the cheerier moments include Ross’s brother Francis’s discovery of copper in Wheal Grace – suggesting that the mine could be the much sought-after answer to the lead star’s financial woes. But, alas, it’s shortly afterwards that a massive tragedy shakes the Poldark family.

Nothing stays too upbeat for long in Poldark’s world, it seems. And, indeed, while the love life of the cute young bachelorette Caroline Penvenen also takes a promising and tantalizing turn before the episode’s end, the show’s suitably slimy villain, the below-pictured George Warleggan, has come across a new plan for economically crippling Ross. You’ll be shuddering at what he’s got up his sleeve…

As for whether Ross succeeds in foiling Warleggan’s deviousness, you will have to wait until at least next week’s episode. Episode 4 airs on the PBS Masterpiece series from 9pm Eastern Time tonight, while you’ll be able to catch the fifth episode at the same place and time on Sunday, October 30.
