Though Windows 10 has been available as a free update for Windows 7 and 8.1 users since July, statistics suggest that only a small fraction of these users have taken up the offer. So, five months later, is Windows 10 worth updating to – particularly for Apple device users?
Do these Windows offer a good view of your Apple tree?
With NetMarketShare statistics suggesting that about two thirds of all desktop computers could still be running Windows 7 or 8.1, it’s clear that many users of these computers are routinely syncing them with Apple devices. So, if you are one of these people, is it worth moving to Windows 10 before the free offer expires?
Well, we can start with the good news that Windows 10 should not require too much hassle for you to install. The Get Windows 10 app can tell you whether various parts of your computer are compatible, while the installation process will, according to Microsoft, take just over an hour in most cases. Our own experience suggests that this advice is sound.
Your Windows 10 computer and Apple device – surprisingly good partners
In your first few minutes and hours of experimenting with Windows 10, you could be pleasantly surprised by how zippy it feels in comparison to your former OS. Furthermore, Microsoft has added a number of new features to ease the process of syncing your Windows 10 computer with your Apple device.
One of these new features is Phone Companion. As our screenshot attests, both smartphones and tablets are catered for with this app, which can guide you through installing numerous Microsoft apps – including Cortana, Skype, OneDrive and Word – on your iOS device. You can then alternate use of your computer and iOS device more seamlessly.
Of course, there are also alternative, non-Microsoft apps for such easy synchronization. For example, you are likely to overlook Microsoft’s little-used Groove music app in favor of Spotify or Apple Music, while Apple’s iWork for iCloud apps mean that even Microsoft Office can be avoided. It largely just depends which company’s apps you prefer to use.
In a nutshell: should you get Windows 10?
Whether you upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1, you’re likely to find Windows 10 much more of an evolution than a revolution. With just a few exceptions, like the integration of virtual assistant Cortana, there are few new killer features. However, the time is ticking on that free upgrade offer, while the enhanced speed and, following Windows 8.1, more traditional design help to make Windows 10 the most stable and intuitive version in years.
