Season five of Rick and Morty, one of the most popular animated series of our time, has just recently ended, and while we do know that a season six is on the way, we’re going to see the two beloved weirdos return to television sooner rather than later. Namely, Cartoon Network has revealed, via its official Twitter account, that a new Rick and Morty horror short is going to air on October 17, 2021, as part of the network’s celebration of the DC Fandome event. After two DC’s animated features, a short film will air on October 17th at 4:15 EST. The short’s title was revealed to be “The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara”.

Cartoon Network and Toonami have been quite mysterious about the short, but Canada’s Adult Swim revealed some additional information about the short’s plot: “Rick plans to build the ultimate AI toaster; Things take a strange turn when he and Morty are forced to travel to Akihabara for spare parts.”

As you can see from the brief description is going to be action-packed and will, seemingly, continue the tradition of the show’s fan-favorite anime shorts that have been airing since 2020. Based on the title, this one is also going to be related to Japan and Japanese culture, just like 2020’s Samurai & Shogun and “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider”, and 2021’s “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)”.

The short’s runtime has not been revealed, but based on what we know from experience, viewers can expect the short to run for roughly ten minutes or so.

Rick and Morty serie

Rick and Morty is continuing to grow and expand its fictional universe. Back in May 2018, the producers struck a long-term deal that will see 70 new episodes of Rick and Morty spread through multiple seasons, which is why we are eagerly waiting for the sixth season to finally hit the screens. Until then, you can stream the first five seasons, as well as other released material on Netflix, Hulu, or HBO Max.
