Rumor: Apple to release cheaper MacBook Air at the end of this year

A silver MacBook Air laptop with its screen displaying a mountain landscape at sunset. The laptop is shown from a slight side angle, open and powered on, with the macOS desktop visible, including various app icons in the dock at the bottom. Exciting news: Apple plans to release a cheaper MacBook Air by the end of this year.

Finally, Apple is listening to demand is understands that their prices make some of their technology unavailable to so many. The current MacBook Air is on sale for $999, but rumors suggest that by the end of the year Apple will release a lower cost version.

These reports come from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who believes this product will be one of three that Apple is releasing this year. The other two have already been much discussed, but this is the first mention of a cheaper MacBook Air.

However, Kuo does not give away any other details about the new MacBook, apart from the lower price tag. The current models haven’t been upgraded in three years and the 11-inch model has been completely discontinued, so perhaps this update won’t come as a surprise to many.

We can only speculate about what the updates to the MacBook Air will be but it could feature internal upgrades and an improved display. There could even be a completeĀ redesign as it hasn’t seen any major changes in 3 years. The MacBook Air was updated at the 2017 WWDC to feature a slightlyĀ faster processor and 8GB of RAM as a default but no major changes have taken place in recentĀ years.

What would you like to see in the upgrade? Are you more interested in improvements in the display or internal upgrades?
