Samsung and LG to Supply OLED Displays for Future iPhones

The South Korean component makers Samsung Display and LG Display are closing in on a final agreement with Apple to supply OLED screens for future iPhones, according to a new report.

OLED, or organic light emitting diode, displays have long been rumored for impending inclusion in iPhones. Now, the Korean-language Electronic Times has, according to Reuters, cited unnamed sources in claiming that Samsung and LG now plan to spend a combined 15 trillion won – that’s $12.8 billion – on setting up OLED production over the coming two to three years.

The South Korean news outlet also reportedly claimed that Apple is likely to provide some funding to help these two suppliers to get up and running with OLED production. OLED panels are thinner than the LCD screens currently standard in iPhones, while also offering better picture quality.
