Samsung at CES 2018

CES 2018, the biggest technology event of the year, is finally here! It is taking place from 9th to 12th January in Las Vegas, and already Samsung is steaming ahead with a number of new announcements.

The Wall

Possibly the biggest announcement Samsung made at this year’s event is The Wall. This modular TV measures a huge 146 inches and offers both deep blacks and bright highlights. This reduces the need for a backlight. It is likely this TV will come with the option of custom sizes because it can be arranged to form unusual dimensions. For example, during the presentation, they presented a very wide version of the screen.

Samsung claims that its next generation of smart TVs will be better than ever before, thanks to their voice-activated assistant Bixby. Bixby first made an appearance in last year’s Galaxy S8 and is likely to appear in home appliances as well as televisions this year. AI assistants have featured in a number of smart TVs at this year’s event, such as Philips’ 7703 Series 24-inch Android TV, designed for kitchen worktops.

8K TV

Samsung’s TV focus does not end with The Wall, but they are also planning to release their first 8K TV this year. Samsung calls the Q9S TV the first 85-inch 8K TV with artificial intelligence. This TV will have a 7,680 x 4,320 display, 16 times more pixels than 1080p and 4 times that of today’s 4K TVs.

Foldable phone

It is possible Samsung will become the first company to release a foldable phone! That’s right, this phone has been six years in the making and isn’t the first time Samsung has played with the idea of a foldable phone. Back in 2011, they launched a prototype of a foldable phone, which remained intact after 100,000 folds. Their brand new, so-called Samsung Galaxy X has been the subject of rumors for some time, and 2018 could finally be the year we see it on shop floors.

Family Hub Refrigerator

This updated refrigerator uses Bixby, has premium quality speakers in the doors and allows you to see the contents of your fridge when you’re our the house. It will even send you notifications, reminding you when you need to go grocery shopping. It will be interesting to see how long it will take for the smart fridge to automatically detect what you’re putting in the fridge without you having to input the details, the next logical step for this invention.

Samsung certainly has a lot up its sleeve this year, and we might also see the Notebook 7 Spin and the NW700 Sound+ soundbar in stores in 2018.

What are your thoughts on the smart refrigerator?
