Technology market research firm Counterpoint today published a list of the world’s top ten selling smartphones in April, and it turns out that there is both good and bad news for Samsung. The good news is that its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets are selling very well. The bad news is that neither of them are selling as well as Apple’s iPhone 6 models, even though those phones have been on the market for much longer than the Samsung offerings.
We still reckon, however, that the South Korean company has plenty to be pleased about. The Galaxy S6 phones, which have been commercially available since April 10, together outsold last year’s flagship Galaxy S5, and the Edge – pictured above – has sold much more than had been anticipated. Counterpoint research director Neil Shah has noted that the Edge could have sold even more were it not for “supply issues”, adding that “it is on track to become more popular than the standard version as Samsung’s marketing engine kicks-in at full-speed”.
Topping the list is the basic iPhone 6 model, followed by the “phablet” iPhone 6 Plus in second place. That these models sold so well more than six months following their launch is impressive, especially considering that sales of these models far exceeded even those of the iPhone 5S and 5C in the same month last year.
