Samsung is reportedly planning to launch a new foldable flip phone in 2020.
Despite widespread criticism over its Samsung Fold device, which was delayed after “crease-gate,” the company is reportedly plowing ahead with future foldable developments.
A report from Bloomberg suggests that Samsung is working on a new high-end smartphone that can be folded into a square.
The report suggested that the South Korean smartphone giant was in the final stages of developing a 6.7-inch inner display that shrinks to a pocketable square when it’s folded inward like a clamshell.
The company is reportedly working with American designer Thom Browne on the project, designed to appeal to a broader range of consumers – including those interested in fashion, luxury, and status rather than just the device’s technical specifications.
However, the device is expected to feature cutting-edge display technology and bring back the flip-phone form factor, which was hugely popular in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Bloomberg suggests that the phone will feature a hole-punch selfie camera on the top of the display, with two rear-facing cameras on the outside which would work when the phone is open.
The new phone will also reportedly be more affordable and thinner than the Galaxy Fold, which itself has just been redesigned and will retail for $1,980 later this month in several markets, though it’s unknown where those markets are or exactly when in September.
Apple is also reportedly developing foldable display technology, but the company has many patents for technology products it never plans to release, so there’s no suggestion that a foldable iPhone or iPad is coming any time soon.
