Samsung SDI, an electronic materials manufacturer that is part of the South Korean conglomerate company of Samsung, has announced its signing of a contract to construct a new plant in China. The plant will provide a production line for polarizer films, which are crucial for various optical features in devices including smartphones, tablets and laptop computers.
Namseong Cho, Samsung SDI’s CEO, and Li Xiaomin, the secretary of the Wuxi Municipal Party Committee, have signed a memorandum of understanding for the plant to be built in the Wuxi Industrial District, part of the city of Wuxi in China’s Jiangsu Province. Under the agreement, Samsung SDI intends to spend about 200 billion won on the plant, which will commence mass production in November 2016.
The company has revealed that it operates three production lines for polarizer films, which can be attached to LCD panels to enable control of brightness and contrast in various types of devices, at maximum capacity in the city of Cheongju in South Korea. The plans for the new plant therefore seem likely to bring considerable benefits for both Samsung SDI and the Chinese economy.
