Remember flip phones? They are making a comeback… well, sort of. Samsung has officially announced a new high-end Android flip phone, the W2017 – though it looks unlikely to be released outside of China.
The W2017 is the successor to the W2016, another powerful Android flip phone previously released in the People’s Republic. As reported by SamMobile, the W2017 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage expandable through microSD.
It also comes with two 4.2-inch Super AMOLED displays – one on the inside, visible when the clamshell body is open, and the other on the outside, giving the W2017 the look of a more traditional smartphone when it’s closed. The 12-megapixel camera on the back can be used for recording 4K video, and then there’s a 5-megapixel front snapper for selfies. The phone will ship with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
While pricing has not yet been announced, we should expect a big price tag to go with the impressive specs. Furthermore, with the W2016 not having been made available in territories other than China, we shouldn’t hold our breath for the W2017 to reach wider availability than its predecessor.
