Just two weeks after releasing the first beta of iOS 11, Apple has released the second to developers. What Apple refers to as “a monumental leap for iPad” will be available to everyone from Autumn and some of the new features are pretty exciting!
New features overview
There’s no shortage of new features with the new update, some that are genuinely exciting and useful, while some will solve problems you never knew you had!
The iPad appears to be the main focus initially, with new features to improve everyday use. Your iPad will now feature a dock at the bottom of the screen, changing according to the apps you are using most frequently. Even more exciting is the new multitasking feature. The new update includes a split view, allowing you to open several apps at once and easily transfer text or photos between the two in one drag.
The app store has been completely redesigned, ready to introduce the new ARKit and apps using augmented reality. Even the keyboard is getting a facelift. Switching between keyboards will soon be a thing of the past, as Apple include all keys on one keyboard, allowing you to swipe down on an individual key to use other options.
Apple is even jumping on the Boomerang train, including loop and bounce features on live photos, as well as updating the filter options.
Revamp of existing essential apps
A whole range of existing apps are being updated, including maps, your music, siri, the control centre and the lock screen.
Siri promises to be even more helpful, although we’re not sure exactly how helpful she was in the first place. After the novelty wore off, it was generally easier to not sure her, but maybe we’ll all be Siri converts before long.
The control centre will offer customisation so settings you actually use regularly can feature here.
New accessories
Apple will be releasing a new and improved Apple Pencil alongside iOS 11, where users can easily write, doodle or draw on PDFs or screenshots. They are also introducing a ‘scan and sign’ feature in Notes so you will no longer have to print, sign and rescan documents.
Safety first
The ‘do not disturb’ option is now being extended for use while driving. The idea is to stop drivers being distracted by notifications and those attempting to contact you will be informed that you are driving.
How many of these features will be used regularly once the novelty wears off, we aren’t sure, but it does look like iOS 11 will be jam packed with new ideas.
