Sony are taking pre-order for smart glasses despite the failure of the Google Glass project. The tech giant has said that a developer edition of their augmented reality glasses will go on sale in March. They will be available in ten countries and have been branded SmartEyeglass. The devices will cost $840.
Pre-orders are being taken in the UK and Germany now, with the US and Japan to follow. They will be compatible with the latest Android operating systems.
Google said it was withdrawing its glasses last month and starting afresh with the project. Sony are encouraging users to design apps for the wearable tech. The glasses will come with image and brightness sensors, a 3MP camera, accelerometer and gyroscope as well as a microphone. A controller, which will be attached to clothes and contains a speaker, touch sensor and a battery will come as part of the package.
Apple boss Tim Cook has said he is not a fan of smart glasses, calling them “intrusive”. Some experts have said that Sony are wasting their time following the decision by Google to withdraw their glasses. Some experts have asked why companies keep developing smart glasses when there appears to be no real consumer demand for them.
