Earlier this week, Apple Music announced The Weeknd’s new album was streamed 26 million times in the first 24 hours on their platform, with the lead song claiming 6 million of those! Meanwhile, Spotify reported the single was streamed almost 3.5 million times over the same period on their service. However, there is a twist!
Since Apple Music announced their figures and their success was widely reported, Spotify has now released new data. Spotify is now claiming the numbers it initially released were incorrect. “Call Out My Name” was actually streamed 7.5 million times in the first 24 hours and the album as a whole was streamed 29 million times, 3 million more than on Apple Music!
Apple Music’s initial success was so surprising because they have around 120 million fewer users than Spotify. However, their win was only short lived.
A Spotify spokesman stated:
“The Weeknd’s EP My Dear Melancholy, received nearly 29 million Spotify streams within the first 24 hours of release, while the single “Call Out My Name” received 7.5 million streams within the first 24 hours of release. These numbers do not include streams of two videos for songs from the EP that can only be found on Spotify.”
It is possible that there is a delay on Spotify’s chart counter, causing the confusion. However, it is surprising that the delay would be as much as five days!
