Earlier this week, Apple Music announced The Weekndโs new album was streamed 26 million times in the first 24 hours on their platform, with the lead song claiming 6 million of those! Meanwhile, Spotify reported the single was streamed almost 3.5 million times over the same period on their service. However, there is a twist!
Since Apple Music announced their figures and their success was widely reported, Spotify has now released new data. Spotify is now claiming the numbers it initially released were incorrect. โCall Out My Nameโ was actually streamed 7.5 million times in the first 24 hours and the album as a whole was streamed 29 million times, 3 million more than on Apple Music!
Apple Musicโs initial success was so surprising because they have around 120 million fewer users than Spotify. However, their win was only short lived.
A Spotify spokesman stated:
โThe Weekndโs EP My Dear Melancholy, received nearly 29 million Spotify streams within the first 24 hours of release, while the single โCall Out My Nameโ received 7.5 million streams within the first 24 hours of release. These numbers do not include streams of two videos for songs from the EP that can only be found on Spotify.โ
It is possible that there is a delay on Spotifyโs chart counter, causing the confusion. However, it is surprising that the delay would be as much as five days!
