Spotify kills Shuffle button on albums following request from Adele

Spotify has removed the shuffle button from albums following a request from Adele.

The company has removed the controversial button and now allows users to easily plan an album from beginning to end. Previously, a large ‘shuffle’ button was in place of the new play button, meaning albums rarely played in order unless they were manually selected by listeners.

Now, albums will have a large play button and music will play in the order artists had intended.

Speaking of the change, UK singer Adele said: “This was the only request I had in our ever-changing industry! We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our tracklisting for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you, Spotify for listening.”

The streaming giant has rolled out the feature for premium subscribers so that when they listen to new albums they’ll play in order rather than choosing random songs. However, those on the ad-supported tier of Spotify will still have to suffer with shuffled albums and ads in between songs.

Speaking to Mashable, a Spotify spokesperson said: “As Adele mentioned, we are excited to share that we have begun rolling out a new Premium feature that has long been requested by both users and artists to make play the default button on all albums.

“For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the shuffle toggle. As always, we will continue to iterate our products and features to create the best experiences for both artists and their fans.”
