Spotify is reportedly readying the release of its new HiFi service following Apple Music’s announcement of new Spatial Audio and lossless sound quality, according to a report from an iOS developer who has seen a new build.

According to Reddit user, TheMonarc, hidden code in the iOS Spotify app means that it’s possible to see a new HiFi menu, with the user telling followers that he “successfully opened the ‘HiFi’ menu by quickly tapping the glitched icon upon app launch,” adding a video that demonstrated the feature, suggesting an imminent release.

Earlier in the year, the European streaming giant said that it planned to release a high-fidelity streaming service tier later in the year, and said it would be an add-on to existing Spotify Premium. Since then, however, Spotify has upped its pricing, and with Apple Music offering lossless music for free, the firm could follow a similar path.

Inside of the iOS Spotify app, users will be able to turn on HiFi listening, and early data suggests that music will play at around 16-bit/44.1 kHz quality, the same as Apple Music’s new lossless service. It will be interesting to see how Spotify approaches the new add-on service, and whether users will have to pay more for it.

Apple and Spotify have been engaged in an ongoing battle over streaming, with the European brand claiming that Apple has an unfair advantage. Spotify no longer allows users to subscribe to its service on iOS, as Apple would take a 30% cut of subscription revenue, and so instead users must sign up for the service on a browser.
