Sprint offering annual phone upgrades through new leasing scheme

Sprint, the fourth biggest wireless carrier in the United States, has announced that it will launch new phone leasing options for price-sensitive customers.

The deal, which will allow customers to lease any phone alongside their wireless plan and upgrade it after a year, is Sprint’s latest attempt at attracting new customers to its network.

Customers of the plan would effectively be able to upgrade their smartphone every year – so you could upgrade just in time for the release of the new iPhone 8, and get the latest release delivered to your home just weeks after Tim Cook announces the successor.

Speaking of the new scheme, Robert Hackl, Sprint’s senior vice president of leasing, said: “We want to give full flexibility to our customers because you don’t want to get stuck with an old phone.”

Sprint’s new changes are a true testament to the competitiveness of the United States wireless market, with carriers battling it out to lure customers to their networks with new deals and special offers. Earlier this year, Verizon began offering an unlimited data plan for data-heavy consumers, and Sprint followed suit by offering up to five lines of unlimited data for just $90 per month – cheaper than any of its competitors’ plans.

The new deal from Sprint will undoubtedly change the way consumers purchase or lease their smartphones. Currently, Sprint is the only ‘big carrier’ to offer phone leasing, but others are expected to follow suit as market penetration and competition increases.
