We hear about Steve Jobs’ corporate legacy all the time, and the world always has one eye on the Apple that the late founder left too soon. However, we haven’t really heard much about the other side of Steve Jobs’ legacy, the family he had to leave behind. Jobs’ widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, is aiming to fix that by announcing her latest governmental endeavor. Ms. Jobs is attempting to shape Capital Hill by heavily promoting the passing of a new immigration bill, know as the “Dream Act.”
For anyone unfamiliar, the Dream Act is a proposed bill that would give immigrants (that entered the United States before the age of 15, are currently under the age of 30, and have lived here for at least 5 years) the freedom to apply for permanent residency into the United States. It is a bill that has been floating around the annals of congress since 2001, but has struggled to pass.
Ms. Jobs aims to end the shunning of this bill and has created a website titled “The Dream is Now (Link).” Her creation is the product of a collaboration between herself and the talented filmmaker, Davis Guggenheim. The project itself launched Tuesday and contains a plethora of video interviews with real immigrants who came to this country as children. All of the interviewed parties would be aided by the Dream Act, and Ms. Job’s claims that this website will help educate the general public about the plight of these people by providing a “face to the story.”
This is a great cause and the perfect opportunity for Ms. Jobs to create her own legacy by helping the Dream Act to pass. A bill like this could greatly influence American culture and could definitely help to stimulate the economy by accepting more tax-paying citizens into its ranks. Hopefully, Ms. Jobs’ hard work and persistent attitude will help kickstart the government into giving this bill the attention it deserves.
