The much-anticipated Super Mario Run app has had a very successful launch. After only being available for a day, the app already sits at the top of both the free charts and the top grossing charts of the Apple App store.

The game is available to play for free, but additional content becomes available if users choose to pay for an unlock, which gives players access to six game world, plus some in-game currency.

Super Mario Run marks the very first iOS app that Nintendo have created. Nintendo does partly own Pokemon Go with their minority share in the Pokemon Company, but third party developers Niantic developed that app.

Super Mario Run places three spots ahead of Pokemon Go on the top grossing list, which has experienced a slight dip in popularity over the months.

With more content being announced for Pokemon Go in the near future, could Super Mario Run maintain its top spot for long?
