Tablet Frenzy Clears Stocks

LONDON–More than three million tablet computers have been sold in over the Christmas period, leaving hundreds of shops out of stock.

Retailers including Dixons, Argos and Aldi launched new models in the run-up to Christmas to challenge the Apple iPad, Kindle, Google Nexus and Tesco’s Hudl.

For example, several Argos stores had sold out on Friday of the 16 GB Kindle Fire HD tablet priced at pounds sterling 119.99. The same tablet was back in stock yesterday at pounds sterling 139.99.

Some shoppers, such as Lisa Adlington in Liverpool, tweeted in frustration. She wrote from her account @clapyourhandss: Why is the Kindle Paper White sold out everywhere on Speke Retail Park?’

A spokesman for Dixons said: The iPad Air is in high demand and selling rapidly, but we do still have stock.’
