Matt Damon sci-fi adventure The Martian and the eagerly anticipated biopic Steve Jobs have proved two of the biggest winners at this weekend’s box office so far.
The Martian, which has been acclaimed as a solid return to form for director Ridley Scott, is now in its second weekend and grossing more than originally estimated, having amassed $11 million from showings across 3,854 locations. According to Variety, this haul could rise to $37 million for the three-day weekend.
Steve Jobs, the Danny Boyle-directed cinematic story of the eponymous late Apple co-founder, began screening in just four locations on Friday, ahead of a nationwide release later this month. Nonetheless, it collected $175,000 on the day, and is expected to reach $530,000 over the full weekend. In fact, the film, starring Michael Fassbender as the tech visionary and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak, is on course for the most lucrative limited launch this year.
