One of Apple’s biggest original TV shows, The Morning Show, received a tonne of negative reviews when the first three episodes were released alongside the launch of Apple TV+.
However, producers of the show have suggested that the negative reviews were from people who “wanted Apple to fail”. They were speaking at the Recode Code Media conference.
Currently, The Morning Show has a critics score of 59 out of 100, but a user score of 7.4 out of 10, a hugely different response between critics and the general public.
Mimi Leder and Kerry Ehren, who produce the series, spoke to NBC’s Dylan Byers at yesterday’s conference about the show and its reception so far, with Leder saying that she thought the reviews “were nuts” and that they probably came from “Apple haters”.
“When those reviews came in, I didn’t know what show they were watching. And I just kind of thought they were nuts,” she said during an interview.
“I just felt there were a lot of Apple haters and wanting Apple to fail.”
“There are certain weak moments where I’m like, ‘How did I get responsible for this?’” Ehren added when asked about creating content for a new platform with a huge potential audience.
“It’s slightly intimidating. I try not to think about it too much.”
It had previously been suggested that Apple had spent an incredible $300 on The Morning Show, but producer Leder confirmed that this was not the case when asked earlier in the month.
During the Recode interview, Ehren added that they weren’t worried about the “business aspect” of Apple TV+, and that they were instead focused on creating content.
“We’re focused on the story we’re telling, the characters. We’re inside of it. So when you see reviews that are looking at it from the whole business aspect, like, ‘What is Apple doing?’ and, ‘They spent this much money on it’ — it’s kind of separate from us.”
The Morning Show is now available to stream on Apple TV+, but the company is only releasing one new episode every week, so don’t expect to binge the series just yet!
