Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is considered to be among the best comic book series ever written. Gaiman’s unique style, combined with the amazing art and the depth of the stories themselves is something that is truly inspiring in so many ways and that is why The Sandman has become so important for the history of comic books. As it happens with most popular franchises, especially in this era of successful comic book adaptations, studios have been eager to adapt Gaiman’s work for years and it wasn’t until recently that we got a confirmation of an adaptation, as Netflix began work on a series that would bring the stories of Dream (or Morpheus) on the big screen.
The story will follow Dream’s awakening in 2021 after more than a century of captivity and his attempts to restore his kingdom, the Dreaming, which has decayed because of his overly long absence.
Although we had information about a star-filled cast, we did not have much information until recently, when the main cast members have been revealed, and we can confirm that the list is absolutely amazing!
The casting announcements were sporadic until a big announcement in May 2021 gave us almost all the important names. Patton Oswalt was the first actor to be confirmed for the series, having been cast as the voice of Matthew the Raven. In January 2021, Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar were announced to be starring in the series. But that wasn’t it.
In May 2021, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Jenna Coleman, Niamh Walsh, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Kyo Ra, Stephen Fry, Razane Jammal, and Sandra James Young were also added to the cast and with this announcement, we’ve gotten our cast list.
With so many talented and prize-winning actors, The Sandman is a sure hit you’ll just have to see sometime later this calendar year!
