The third-generation iPad will become obsolete tomorrow

According to an internal memo distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers, tomorrow Apple will officially add its third-generation iPad to the vintage and obsolete products list.

This memo states that both the Wi-Fi and cellular models of the third-gen iPad will be classified as obsolete everywhere in the world except California and Turkey, due to legalities in those regions. This distinction means that Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers will no longer repair or service the tablet, since it has been five years since the last was manufactured.

However, in California and Turkey, third-generation iPad owners can still obtain service from Apple Stores or by calling Apple Support. The extended coverage is expected to last until October 2019.

The third-generation iPad was released in March 2012 and it was Apple’s last with a 30 pin dock connector. It was discontinued only seven months later upon release of the fourth-generation iPad with lightning connector.

iPad 2 is yet to receive classification as it remained in Apple’s tablet lineup as a low-cost option until 2014.
