Tim Cook addresses Apple TV+ success at earnings call

Apple TV Trying

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has addressed Apple’s controversial streaming service at its latest earnings call, marking the first time the boss has discussed the success of the platform.

Apple launched its own Netflix rival at the back-end of 2019, and though several of its shows have gone on to secure nods at respectable events, the platform still offers just a handful of original shows and has been marked with criticism and controversy amongst shareholders.

Tim Cook refused to offer specific numbers on Apple TV+ subscribers but said that the service is going “very well” and that the company feels “really good” about where the service is.

Speaking to journalists, Cook said: “TV+ is going very well, as you know the objective and philosophy of ‌Apple TV+‌ is to create high-quality original content and to be one of the most desired platforms for storytellers. I see that happening day by day, we have more shows, more storytellers.

“To date, Apple originals have received 352 award nominations and 98 wins. We have shows that have gotten significant buzz like Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Defending Jacob, etc. We feel really good about where we are. We’re not releasing subscriber numbers.”

Apple has continued to offer free trials for consumers who subscribed to Apple TV+, and those who receive the service as part of an Apple One subscription receive a $5 reimbursement per month.

This program is due to come to an end in July, though the company has been offering trials and extensions for a long time and it’s likely to continue.
