Apple CEO Tim Cook has teased the long-rumored Apple AR/VR headset.
Speaking in an interview with China Daily, the boss was asked about augmented reality and hinted at a headset for the first time. He said that Apple was “excited” about the opportunities that lie ahead in augmented reality, and though he’s made similar comments to that in the past, he referenced that big things were coming for AR in the future.
“I am incredibly excited about AR as you might know, and the critical thing to any technology including AR is putting humanity at the center of it. And that is what we focus on every day,” he said.
“Right now, as an example, we have over 14,000 ARKit apps in the App Store, which provide AR experiences for millions of people around the world.”
“I think despite that, we’re still in the very early innings of how this technology will evolve. I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities we’ve seen in this space and sort of stay tuned and you’ll see what we have to offer.”
Though that, of course, wasn’t a direct confirmation that an Apple headset would be coming, it’s the first time that Cook has confirmed that Apple has bigger plans in the space. It’s been rumored for a few years now that Apple will soon launch a mixed reality headset, featuring a curved visor similar to this Apple View concept.
