Dating app Tinder will soon ask customers to prove their identities to access the app’s features.
The company confirmed that the plan was to reduce the number of fake profiles on the platform, and ensure that each user was authentic. Gizmodo first reported that the company has been testing ID verification on the platform since 2019 in Japan, and now the feature will be offered around the world.
When it does launch, users can show Tinder a government-issued ID card or document to prove their identity.
It’s interesting to note that, at launch, the feature will be optional, but the firm hasn’t ruled out making it compulsory in the future. The firm previously rolled out a photo verification service to offer a similar service.
Speaking of the launch, Tinder said: “We know one of the most valuable things Tinder can do to make members feel safe is to give them more confidence that their matches are authentic and more control over who they interact with. And we hope all our members worldwide will see the benefits of interacting with people who have gone through our ID verification process. We look forward to a day when as many people as possible are verified on Tinder.”
