Tips when transitioning your workplace to Macs

Workspace

As a small or medium-sized business owner, you’ll know just how important it is to have the right technology to empower your staff to perform at their best. Although most firms choose Windows PCs as a starting point, a growing number of startups are choosing the Mac instead. Below, we’ve put together some tips on transitioning.

Invest in the latest technology

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of advice we can give you is to make sure you’re investing in the latest macOS devices so you and your team can feel the power of the Mac. Apple’s recent M1-powered devices really pack their punch and offer supreme speed and performance, whether you’re browsing the web or editing 5K video content, and with impeccable battery lives and long lifespans, buying new is better than second hand.

Use Google Workspace

Although Apple has come a long way in recent years to make its software better for big businesses, iCloud still lags behind some corporate workplace software packages like Microsoft Office 365 or Google Workspace. We recommend using one of these cross-platform, cloud-based suites for email, storage, calendars, and collaboration in the short term so that you can slowly move employees over to the Mac. You might then decide that iCloud is right for you – if it’s not, Google’s suite of tools work really well on Safari and Google Chrome.

Utilise macOS software

Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with the software Apple offers as standard, so make the most of it. Safari is leaps and bounds ahead of Google Chrome in terms of speed and reliability on the Mac, though it does struggle with some older websites, and core apps like Reminders and Notes are useful in the workplace, too, as is Apple’s suite of productivity apps – Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. We also recommend their free editing tools like iMovie and GarageBand, and you should prioritise FaceTime in macOS Monterey over Zoom and Hangouts.

Let staff take their Macs home

One of the best ways to encourage your employees to embrace Mac is to allow them to take their new MacBooks and iPads home with them. They’ll be able to work remotely when they’re not in the office and, in time, they’ll get used to working on the platform if they’re not already doing so. Offering support or macOS for Beginner classes is another way to get staffers engaged; this video below serves as a great starting point!
