A leading Twitter executive has accidentally unveiled plans to acquire another company after making what was supposed to a direct message public. The Tweet, which was sent by chief financial officer Anthony Noto and has now been deleted, was meant to be sent to a colleague and apparently shows that even Twitter bosses can have trouble using the service properly.
Noto joined Twitter earlier this year. His Tweet read “I think we should buy them. He is on your schedule for Dec 15 or 16 — we will need to sell him. i have a plan.”
Twitter has a history of buying up small firms and incorporating their features into their micro-blogging service. Tech fans are already speculating about which company Noto was referring to. The tech site Recode has suggested that Noto was talking about the selfie app Shot, but also thinks that he may have been referring to Secret – an app which enables its users to share messages with a large audience anonymously. Others are convinced that Noto may have been planning to buy Mic, a news website targeted at young people.
Noto is not the first high-profile individual to accidentally sent a DM as a Tweet, with New York congressman Anthony Weiner having accidentally making public an image depicting himself in his underwear. Weiner initially claimed he had been hacked before admitting he was intending to send a direct message.
