Twitter announces voice-based tweets feature on iOS and Android

A split image displays two screens of the Twitter interface on a smartphone. The left screen shows a Twitter timeline with voice-based tweets highlighted in a tweet. The right screen presents the recording interface, complete with profile picture, recording controls, and audio waves. Available on iOS and Android.

Twitter has announced that users will soon be able to tweet with their voice, sending audio-based tweets for the first time on the platform. Rather than typing out a story or sending users to a YouTube or SoundCloud feed, they can upload audio natively.

Speaking of the announcement, Twitter said: “Twitter is where you go to talk about what’s happening. Over the years, photos, videos, gifs, and extra characters have allowed you to add your own flair and personality to your conversations.

“But sometimes 280 characters aren’t enough and some conversational nuances are lost in translation. So starting today, we’re testing a new feature that will add a more human touch to the way we use Twitter – your very own voice.”

Users can create their own voice tweets by opening up the tweet composer and tapping on the new wavelengths button. From there, audio can be recorded in a similar way to iMessage or Messenger, and up to 140 seconds of audio can be included in a single tweet.

If users want to share longer voice clips, Twitter will create multiple voice tweets for you.

Just like other tweets, voice tweets appear on Twitter timelines, and tweets can be listened to by tapping on the new icon. On iOS, playback will start in the audio player that’s docked at the bottom of a timeline so users can continue to browse Twitter.

The service is initially rolling out on iOS, but Android would receive the update in the future.
