Twitter Boss Wants Advert Every Twenty Tweets

Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo has said that a promoted tweet could feature on the micro-blogging service every twenty tweets. The company’s CEO was speaking at a tech investor conference in San Francisco and hinted that the move could be integral to its revenue expansion efforts.

Costolo said that making 5% of feeds sponsored content would allow it to compete with Facebook. “We’re well below that now,” he said. “Content creators want to go into an ecosystem, deliver a great experience to users and tell stories, and then make money from it.”

He also said that video was being considered as part of the company’s efforts to increase its revenue, adding: “Marketers like that kind of storytelling.”

The company has just purchased Niche. Niche is an online service that links advertisers with social media personalities. It’s thought that the acquisition will lead to more adverts being featured on Vine.

Costolo recently admitted that his company “sucks” when it comes to dealing with bullying and harassment. The chief executive said in a leaked memo to staff that increasing amounts of people were leaving the service due to trolling, whilst promising that the company would be tougher on trolls in future.
