Twitter has confirmed that its Spaces audio feature will launch in April.
The company has been beta testing the new feature, which is a chat room-style service similar to the new social networking app Clubhouse, for a number of months, and said that it was “not quite ready” to launch just yet, promising it was aiming for a public launch in April.
Spaces allow users to create or join chat rooms, and those who created the space has speaking privileges, allowing others to speak on a particular topic. Twitter is piggybacking off the growing popularity of podcasts and audio content, hoping Spaces will prove successful.
Up to 10 speakers are allowed per Space, but there’s no limit on how many people can join a Space to listen in. It could mean that Spaces becomes the new go-to platform for artists conducting interviews with celebrities, for example, setting Twitter on a new trajectory.
