Twitter launches Project Catalyst app for macOS

A laptop running macOS displays a Twitter homepage against a blue background. The screen shows tweets, one featuring a photo of latte art coffee. On the left is a navigation menu, and on the right, trending topics. "Stay in the know." is written in white on the upper left, reflecting Project Catalyst's seamless integration.

Twitter has launched a new dedicated Mac app, based on its iOS code.

Apple confirmed Project Catalyst back at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, promising that developers would be able to port their iOS and iPadOS apps to the Mac with just a few button clicks.

Twitter was one of the apps that was shown off at the event, and now we get our hands on the software, meaning users can tweet from a dedicated desktop application.

macOS Catalina launched earlier in the week, and from today Twitter for Mac is now available to download from the Mac App Store.

As the new app is built on technologies that power macOS Catalina, you’ll need to upgrade to the most recent version of the OS to use it.

More than a year ago, the company announced it was to discontinue its official Twitter for Mac client, which went down with condemnation from its loyal userbase.

The company said at the time that it was working to unify the Twitter experience across all of its platforms and suggested that users switched to the Twitter for Web experience or the TweetDeck app.

Now that macOS Catalina has arrived with Project Catalyst, it’s now easier for developers such as Twitter to port their iOS apps over to the Mac, meaning Twitter could introduce a new Mac app without much work.

It shares many similarities to the iPad version of the Twitter app, including a left sidebar, the ability to resize the window, and more. Keyboard shortcuts and notifications are just some of the features exclusive to the Mac.
