Twitter officially closes down its Fleets service

Twitter has officially closed down its Fleets service.

The company announced last month that it would abandon the platform due to low usage, and now, August 3, the service is winding down, with users taking to the feature to share their goodbye messages with followers.

Twitter launched the controversial platform in 2020 on the back of the success of Snapchat and Instagram Stories, and wanted to unlock a new revenue stream for the often-struggling brand. But now, the company has admitted defeat and said that it could no longer support the service, confirming its closure would come in early August.

Twitter introduced a number of features to Fleets since its introduction, including the ability to add GIFs and stickers, but since then, it has moved on to services such as Twitter Spaces, where users can get together in chat rooms using their microphones and ask each other questions.

Most recently, Twitter has added the ability to sign into an account using your Apple ID or Google Account.
