The US and UK are planning on carrying out cyber attacks on each other as part of research into cybercrime. A staged attack on the financial sector has been announced and will take place later this year. The arrangement has been called “unprecedented”. Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron are meeting to discuss issues such as encrypted messaging services, which Cameron says aren’t conductive to fighting terrorism.
Cameron has stated his intention to destroy “means of communication” that “we cannot read”, though privacy campaigners have raised concerns about basic human rights being violated. It’s thought that the two leaders will discuss ways to force companies including Facebook and Google to enable governments to look at encrypted messages.
It’s hoped that the cyber war games will enable the UK and US to enhance the flow of threat-related information between each other. It’s said that the first war game will involve staged attacks on institutions like the Bank of England as well as the banks of Wall Street and the City of London.
