Reports are claiming that the US knew that North Korea were responsible for the Sony Pictures hack because it hacked the company’s computers in 2010. Newspapers including the New York Times based their claims on quotes from US officials as leaked National Security Agency documents. The reports say that the US knew North Korea were behind the Sony hack because of hidden software they had placed on their network.
The newspapers say that US investigators believe that the hackers spent weeks building map’s of Sony’s security systems. The hack on Sony led to sensitive information such as salary details being leaked and films appearing on the internet before their release. Sony movie The Interview was also pulled from cinemas due to the leak. The film had angered North Korea due to its depictions of leader Kim Jong-Un. The movie was eventually released online, breaking download records.
Some experts say that the NSA may have known about the planned hack but failed to inform Sony due to its own security concerns. Suggestions that the NSA thought Sony’s security concerns weren’t as important as its own have been circulating.
