Why has the fairy tale of Cinderella endured in popularity for centuries? Cate Blanchett has her own ideas. The actress is routinely a warm and intelligent presence in interviews, so it’s a joy to hear what she has to say about Cinderella and why she joined Kenneth Branagh’s live action retelling of the story.
The Australian told ScreenSlam: “I love fairy tales, and Cinderella in particular, because they deal with really complex issues that face children, but often in quite confronting ways”. She observed that “so many stories that children get told now are always trying to make them feel like the world is a perfect place.”
She added that old fairy tales, on the other hand, “say the world can be a nasty place out there, and you need a lot of courage, and a lot of resilience, and you will fall down before you stand up, and I think they are all the things that happen to Cinderella.”
You can see those things for yourself by watching the movie Cinderella, which has just appeared on iTunes.
