With the iPhone 8 just around the corner and the rumour mill spinning into overdrive, there’s never been a more exciting time to be an Apple fan. With so many new features expected on the tenth iPhone, it’s hard to imagine what the new iPhone 8 will be like.
Luckily for you, you don’t have to. Below, we’ve put together five of the top features we’re hoping to see on the iPhone 8.
But before we do, a word of warning: none of these features have been confirmed by Apple, so don’t get your hopes up just yet.
Waterproofing
Apple introduced water resistance with its iPhone 7 and Watch Edition 2, but we’re still waiting for a truly waterproof iPhone. Apple’s latest smartphone is designed to withstand up to thirty minutes of water submersion, but we think it’d be pretty awesome if we could use our phones for as long as we want in the water. Imagine watching YouTube videos in the bathtub and take selfies in the sea? Here’s hoping iPhone 8 delivers on this rumour!
Wireless Charging
Ever since we switched from three-pin charging cable to the lighting adapter, we’ve been secretly hoping for a wireless alternative. And, after Apple dropped the headphone jack in last year’s iPhone, we’ve never been surer that a wireless iPhone is just around the corner.
Sure, you can splash out on an expensive case which hacks your iPhone and makes it work with Qi wireless charging pads, but we want the real thing. Oh, and, while we’re on that note, we’d love to see the iPhone charge quicker – why is it that Samsung devices can charge within an hour, but iPhones take three hours to re-juice? Answer that, Tim Cook!
Touch ID
It’s rare that you see an existing feature on a wish-list for the new iPhone, but hear us out on this one. New rumours suggest that Apple’s much-loved TouchID will soon be replaced with facial recognition, meaning we’ll be able to unlock our smartphones using our pretty little faces. But let’s face it (see what we did there?) – who really wants to take a selfie every time they use Apple Pay in the local store, and what use would our thumbs be if they could no longer unlock phones?
Battery life
Over recent years, Apple’s bolstered the battery life of its iPads and MacBooks, but our iPhones are still trailing behind – especially for power users. With the new iPhone, we’d love to see a bigger battery, even if that means carrying around a phone that’s a couple of pounds heavier and millimetres thicker than its predecessor.
Edge-to-edge display
Samsung changed the game when it launched the Galaxy Edge a couple of years ago, and we’re still waiting for Apple to follow suit with an edge-to-edge display. Sure, the iPhone and the iPad have come on leaps and bounds from their bezel-heavy designs of yesteryear (like, seriously – the first iPad was more bezel than screen!), but an edge-to-edge display would give users more screen real estate and developers more opportunity to build apps that change the game. And if that means putting TouchID on the back of the phone, a la Google Pixel, then so be it. We’ll take the hit for a bigger, bezel-less screen.
That just about wraps up this countdown of our most wanted iPhone 8 features, but a quick run-down of the features that didn’t make the list. Iris scanning, a curved edge display, an all-glass design, an OLED display, TouchID built into the home screen, a better camera, and a Google Assistant-inspired Siri are all features we’d love to see. Yep, we’re not asking for much.
