WhatsApp announces new privacy focused features

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has announced several new privacy-focused features for the messaging platform.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the updates on Facebook, designed to build trust and ensure consumers do not jump ship to rival platforms. In an upcoming update, users will be able to block people from taking screenshots of photos or videos on the ‘view once’ feature, users will be able to decide who sees when they’re online, and it’ll be possible to leave groups silently for the first time.

Zuckerberg said of the update: “New privacy features coming to WhatsApp: exit group chats without notifying everyone, control who can see when you’re online, and prevent screenshots on view once messages. We’ll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.”

Alongside the new privacy update, WhatsApp is launching a global marketing campaign, starting in the United Kingdom and India, to update users about the new features and help to build trust. From end-to-end encryption and two-step verification to end-to-end encrypted chat backup, WhatsApp does offer a number of industry-leading features, but it has been criticised for its links with Facebook.
