WhatsApp to Support Passkeys for End-to-End Encrypted Backups

Whatsapp

WhatsApp is preparing to add passkey support for encrypted backups, expanding the app’s passwordless security features. The change will allow users to restore backups stored in iCloud or Google Drive using hardware- or biometric-based authentication instead of manually entering an encryption password.

Passkeys use cryptographic key pairs stored on a user’s device, secured by systems like Apple’s Secure Enclave or Android’s Titan M module. This technology prevents password leaks and phishing attempts by replacing static credentials with device-linked authentication.

Once the feature is active, users will be able to set a passkey for their encrypted backup. The private key remains stored locally on the device, while the public key is registered with WhatsApp’s servers. During backup recovery, authentication will occur automatically through Face ID, fingerprint recognition, or a device PIN, as long as the user is logged into the same Apple ID or Google account.

WhatsApp first introduced encrypted cloud backups in 2021, requiring users to create a separate password or 64-digit key. The upcoming passkey option removes that step, making backup recovery faster and less dependent on stored passwords.

The feature is currently under development and was discovered in the latest beta builds of WhatsApp for iOS and Android. It is expected to roll out gradually to all users after internal testing is complete.

Meta has not announced a specific release date, but the rollout will likely follow the company’s usual pattern of region-based updates before a global release.
