When will the new 27-inch iMac be released?

Apple announced a stunning new 24-inch iMac at this year’s Spring Loaded event— AppleMagazine #495 cover story — to replace the previous entry-level 21.5-inch model, overhauling the device’s aesthetics for the first time in more than a decade.

The new iMac has been met with huge praise from technology fans, and many have pre-ordered the new device ahead of its release later next month.

However, though the new entry-level model has all of the bells and whistles you’d expect on a 2021 M1 Mac, professional users are likely holding out for the release of a larger 27-inch model, or the successor to this current product. With Apple ballooning the screen resolution of its smaller model, we’ll likely see that the 27-inch model jumps to 30 or even 32 inches. For sure this new Mac will be even better for work and study than the smaller version. Architecture and design students will not be asking themselves “Can someone do my dissertation, please? My screen is too small for it”, they will be happy to do it themselves. Of course, other big-screen fans will also be ready to use this great option.

The big question, however, is when will we see the new 27-inch iMac?

The truth is that Apple has yet to confirm when the device will be given the M1 treatment, but having previously promised that its entire Macintosh product portfolio would be overhauled by the end of 2021 or early 2022 at the latest, we’ll likely see the new 27-inch iMac this year.

Apple will hold its next major event in June, this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, but the company typically saves this spot for software announcements, such as new versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and iPadOS. However, as it’s a developer-focused event, the company could indeed surprise us with an introduction to the new 27-inch iMac.

More likely, however, is for a late-2021 release. Following WWDC, Apple will likely host its next event in September, announcing new Apple Watches and iPhones, and then another event in October, where it will announce new Macs and iPads. Of course, these plans aren’t set in stone, and as 2020 taught us, nothing can be guaranteed. Apple could surprise-drop the new iMac, or hold off until much later in the year to maximize sales and ensure success.
