Why Pixar Has Returned to Exemplary Form with Inside Out

Since the release of the hugely acclaimed Toy Story in 1995, Pixar has firmly established itself as Hollywood’s most reliable purveyor of thoroughly enjoyable animated features. The studio’s consistently brilliant record has recently been shaken by slightly weak sequels – but Inside Out, set for release in theaters in the US tomorrow, could be its most original project yet.

The movie’s director, Pete Docter, last sat in the Pixar director’s chair for 2009’s Up, which is easily among the most surprisingly thoughtful animated adventures of recent years. Inside Out is even more ambitious, and follows both a young girl called Riley and five anthropomorphized emotions – Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear, and Sadness – in her mind. With this setup, viewers can expect a great satire of the human condition.

However, you shouldn’t just take our word for it. The film has joined the very few movies to score a staggering 100% on the movie critics website Rotten Tomatoes, the ‘critics consensus’ calling Inside Out “inventive, gorgeously animated, and powerfully moving”, which make for “another outstanding addition to the Pixar library of modern animated classics.” You can read much more about the plot, development and critical reception of Inside Out in the next issue of Apple Magazine.
