Earlier this month, we provided a run-down of many of the basic known facts about the upcoming movie biopic of the talismanic Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Since then, the film’s first trailer has also emerged. However, reactions to news about the movie have not been universally positive. Many concerns have focused on the film’s star, Michael Fassbender, and his perceived inability to play Jobs well.
Fassbender was not scriptwriter Aaron Sorkin’s first choice for the role. Emails leaked as a result of the hack of Sony Pictures late last year revealed that Sorkin had wanted Tom Cruise to play Jobs, and described the possibility of Fassbender taking the role as “insane”. Also, it would be sensible to suggest that, in photos and video of the film that we have so far seen, Fassbender does not physically resemble Jobs as closely as Christian Bale, who was previously attached to the role.
It is worth noting, however, that Sorkin later changed his stance on the casting of Fassbender and called him a “great actor”. We reckon that, should Fassbender deliver an excellent and accurate portrayal of Jobs’ personality and mannerisms, any considered lack of physical similarity should be easy to overlook. Get an early taste of the film, which is set for release on October 9, by watching the first trailer below.
