Users of Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 10 operating system will be able to take advantage of the Siri-style voice control assistant Cortana. The tech giant has also announced plans to launch a headset called HoloLens to complement the system. The company also says that users of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Phone will be able to upgrade for free.
Microsoft struggled to get users to pay for Windows 8, which was hit hard by negative reviews. Experts are saying that Microsoft need to take risks in order to get users interested in Windows again, with statistics suggesting that only 10% of computers are being run on the system. Analysts say that developers are paying little attention to Windows when it comes to apps, focussing their attentions on Android and iOS instead. The ‘Windows 9’ name has been skipped completely.
The company hopes that users will wear the new headset at home and in the workplace. The augmented reality device is said to offer a superior experience than Google Glass and other eyewear have provided. NASA are reported to be working with the technology already. An augmented reality version of Minecraft has been previewed by Microsoft. Microsoft are also thought to be retiring Internet Explorer and replacing it with a new browser called Spartan.
