Workout Buddy is designed to make workouts feel more personal and motivating, without turning exercise into noise. Built into the Workout app on Apple Watch, it uses Apple Intelligence on your paired iPhone to analyze your fitness history and your current workout in real time.
The result is encouragement that feels relevant. A reminder when you push past a personal best. A moment of recognition when you hit a milestone you’ve been working toward. Workout Buddy doesn’t talk constantly. It speaks when it matters.
What Workout Buddy Does During a Workout
As you move, Workout Buddy quietly tracks your progress and compares it with your past activity. When you reach meaningful moments, like completing your fastest 10K, crossing a yearly distance goal, or closing your Activity rings, it delivers short audio encouragement through your headphones.
At the end of the session, Workout Buddy also summarizes your workout, highlighting key details such as duration, calories burned, and overall performance. It feels like a coach who knows your history, not just your pace.
Supported Workout Types
Workout Buddy works with a wide range of popular workouts on Apple Watch. These include:
- Outdoor and Indoor Run
- Outdoor and Indoor Walk
- Outdoor and Indoor Cycle
- Hiking
- Elliptical
- Stair Stepper
- High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
- Functional and Traditional Strength Training
This coverage makes it useful for everyday routines as well as structured training plans.
What You Need Before You Start
Workout Buddy requires a supported Apple Watch model paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby. Bluetooth headphones are also required, and both the device language and Siri language must be set to English.
Apple Intelligence is currently available in beta, and feature availability may vary by region and language.

Using Workout Buddy During a Workout
Once your workout starts, Workout Buddy runs automatically in the background. You don’t need to interact with it to receive motivation or milestone updates.
If you prefer silence at any point, you can mute Workout Buddy instantly.
Workflow
During workout > Swipe right > Mute
This flexibility keeps the experience supportive without becoming distracting.
After the Workout Ends
When you finish your workout, Workout Buddy provides a spoken summary highlighting key results, such as total time, calories burned, and notable achievements during the session.
This moment reinforces progress without requiring you to study charts or metrics, keeping the focus on how the workout felt rather than just the numbers.
A Subtle Coach That Learns Over Time
Workout Buddy reflects Apple’s approach to fitness features: personal, data-driven, and respectful of focus. It doesn’t push harder for the sake of it. It recognizes patterns, celebrates progress, and supports consistency.
Over time, those small moments of feedback can make workouts feel less solitary and more rewarding, without changing how you already train.
