Xbox Chief Unsure if Xbox One Can Outsell PlayStation 4

Having seen the PlayStation 4 significantly outsell the Xbox One since both consoles were launched in 2013, Microsoft’s head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has admitted his uncertainty that his team’s console can close the gap.

Spencer’s admission came during a panel at this year’s GeekWire Summit, when he was asked if Microsoft could still surpass Sony in unit sales during the current games console generation. He replied: “You know, I don’t know. You know, the length of the generation… [Sony] have a huge lead”.

Reiterating sentiments previously expressed in response to the PS4’s dominance, Spencer acknowledged that Sony “have a good product”, but that “I love the content, the games line-up that we have.”

He also conceded that Microsoft had “fundamentally lost… the trust of our most loyal customers” back in 2013, during the period of the Xbox One’s launch, due to a number of dubious announced policies concerning online requirements and use of pre-owned games on the console.

In July, Sony revealed that 25.3 million PS4 units had been sold. The most recent officially confirmed number of Xbox One sales is nearly 10 million, though that figure was reported back in November 2014.
