4-inch “iPhone 5e” Reported to Include A8 Chip and Apple Pay

According to a new report from China, the 4-inch iPhone to be launched early this year will be known as the “iPhone 5e” and include an A8 processor, 1GB of RAM and Apple Pay support.

The Chinese website cnBeta.com claims, according to MacRumors, that the “iPhone 5e” will be an “enhanced” iPhone 5s and replace that handset, pictured above, as the entry-level iPhone. cnBeta.com adds that the phone will come with an A8 processor and 1GB of RAM – specs matching those in the iPhone 6 series.

This differs noticeably from a previous prediction by MyDrivers.com that the new handset would have an A9 chip and 2GB of RAM. However, this newer prediction actually makes more sense if Apple intends to continue offering the iPhone 6 models at their present price bracket.

cnBeta.com also re-iterates previous rumors that the “iPhone 5e” will include an NFC chip and Touch ID as part of compatibility with Apple Pay, while claiming that the new phone will launch in February or March. A formal reveal alongside the Apple Watch 2 and iPad Air 3 in March looks likely.
