If you’ve ever tried to search for a new job, you know that it’s hard. But what if the entire process could be “hacked”?
There are iOS apps that promise just that. Sure, we’ve long sobered up from the downloading spree of the “there’s an app for that” era and found out first-hand that most apps are not that useful. On the other hand, the right toolkit can make even the most daunting tasks a lot easier.
Let us introduce you to what we think are some of the most genuinely useful job search apps on the App Store. Why not spend your daily commute from a job you don’t like searching for a job you’ll love?
Resume Builder by Kickresume
iOS App: Resume Builder by Kickresume
Do you remember the last time you had to update your resume? It’s a pain. In the end, you don’t always have time to sit behind a computer to update your resume whenever you see a great job ad. That’s where the Resume Builder by Kickresume comes in handy. The app lets you create, update, and email your PDF resumes directly from your iPhone. All you have to do is pick from a huge variety of customizable resume templates, fill in your details, and add content just by tapping using their library of job-specific pre-written phrases. Your resumes will be stored in the cloud and you can access them from any place, at any time. Also, all resume templates were designed by a team of professional typographers and recruiters. That means that not only do they look great, but you also don’t have to worry about your fancy new resume passing an ATS check.
Standout feature: Pre-written phrases for your resume.
Indeed Job Search
iOS App: Indeed Job Search
Now that you have your resume ready, you can start looking for a job. Apart from checking your local job search sites, you can also visit a big job portal. The Indeed Job Search app includes millions of jobs and is one of the most powerful job-search engines in the world. It’s very easy to use and lets you search through many jobs and fields you normally wouldn’t find anywhere else. You can find openings near you using your mobile’s location tracking and filter job ads by job title, company, or type of contract. Then you can also track your job search progress and see which jobs you’ve already seen, saved, and applied to. This is especially useful when you’re applying for multiple jobs simultaneously. And what if you want to send out some more applications? You can simply set alerts and have the newest jobs that meet your criteria delivered to your inbox.
Standout feature: Tracking your job search progress.
Monster Job Search
iOS App: Monster Job Search
If you want to search for a job in a bit more contemporary (and faster) way, get ready to swipe. But this time, you’re going to be looking for a different kind of company (a potential employer)! Monster’s app is super quick, user friendly and their swipe option is a great way to actually enjoy the job search. All you have to do is set up your profile, upload your resume, and their algorithm will provide you with possible matches based on your application history, search queries, and previous jobs. It can also show you job ads with job descriptions and let you swipe right for the jobs you like and swipe left for the ones you don’t like. If you’re interested in a position, the app will automatically send your resume to an employer. You’ll receive a notification when an employer wants to interview you. But choose carefully — once you skip a job ad, it will disappear forever.
Standout feature: Job searching like Tinder.
Glassdoor
iOS App: Glassdoor – Job Search & more
Most of the time, you cannot know what exactly you’re getting into until you join a company. Enter Glassdoor. It gives you a behind-the-closed-door view of companies and their workplace cultures (hence the name Glassdoor). While the app also functions as a job board, it’s mostly known for its company review section. Employees and applicants from all over the world get to review companies and share information about their salaries, interview process, and questions, or even CEO information. There’s also a company overview that includes the size, industry, company mission, links to the corporate website, and company’s score (from employee ratings). All of that can be useful not only when you want to check if a company is to be trusted, but also to find out whether you would fit in with their culture. For instance, if you’re looking for a work-life balance, you can find out which companies offer it and avoid those that don’t.
Standout feature: Reviews of companies.
Job Interview Coach
iOS App: Job Interview Coach
The last step of your job search is to ace a job interview. There are two key ingredients to that — preparation and confidence. They go hand in hand and the Job Interview Coach app can help you with both. It gives you an overview of 90+ frequently asked job interview questions sorted by topics and provides an example answer for each question. You can even add your own answers that will match your resume and competencies. The app also includes a section “Before Interview” that tells you general tips on how to prepare for an interview, conduct company research, or what you should wear. The app also lets you take a test interview to see how well prepared you are.
Standout feature: Example answers for common interview questions.
