We’ve been eagerly anticipating them for months, and today, Apple finally formally unveiled them: the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus! The new handsets have the display sizes of 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch, and come with a new interface, called 3D Touch, which can detect three different levels of pressure and so enables lots of new touch gestures.
3D Touch enables, from the iPhone’s home screen, shortcuts to frequently-used functions. A light press, for instance, provides a small preview of an app’s content, while a firmer press can bring up the content itself. This interface can be used in this way for in-built apps such as Mail and Phone.
The new iPhones also each come with an A9 processor, which is 70% speedier than its A8 predecessor, and a 12-megapixel rear iSight camera that is capable of capturing Live Photos, with motion and sound, and 4K video – both firsts in any iPhone. The Touch ID sensor, meanwhile, is an updated version that is twice as fast as that of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will come in a choice of four colors: silver, gold, space gray and rose gold, all of which are pictured above. These new iPhones will be contract priced from $299 for the base 16GB model, following the same pricing structure as last year’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and become available for preorder from September 12 for release on September 25.
