Apple TV+ has taken a notable step by launching a “Great Movies on Apple TV+” collection, allowing subscribers in the US to stream an array of 51 movies at no extra charge for a limited time.
This initiative, which includes acclaimed titles such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Private Ryan, and Mad Max: Fury Road, represents one of the most substantial content drops by the streaming service to date, in line with the release of themed originals.
This move could be interpreted as an experiment by Apple to gauge interest in expanding its content library beyond its original productions.
Historically, Apple TV+ has been known for its focus on original content, and this addition might hint at a potential shift in strategy, or at least a willingness to explore new content dynamics.
The collection is diverse, ranging from classic hits to modern blockbusters, and includes Titanic, Gravity, The Prestige, and Fight Club, among others. However, these movies are explicitly marked as available for a limited time, with their availability set to expire by the end of March or April, depending on the title.
This temporary access approach suggests an experimental phase for Apple TV+, possibly testing the waters for a more extensive back catalog offering in the future.
Despite the excitement around these additions, the discoverability of these films within the Apple TV+ app may be challenging, as they have been grouped into a single category.
This organizational choice might limit viewers’ ability to stumble upon these films naturally during their browsing experience.
Moreover, about half of these movies will remain accessible until the end of March, with the rest available through April. Notably, some titles are offered in 3D, providing an enhanced viewing experience for those with compatible devices like the Apple Vision Pro headset.
