Apple’s Vision Pro Launch: Appointment-Only Access in Major U.S. Cities

Apple Vision Pro Headset

Unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023, the Vision Pro is Apple’s first ever spatial computer, blending virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. The headset, driven by the world’s first spatial operating system, visionOS, sports a ground-breaking input system that enables users to interact with 3D digital content in their physical space using their eyes, hands, and voice.

Constructed for comfort and all-day wear, the Vision Pro boasts an ultra-high-resolution display system with 23 million pixels across two micro-OLED displays. This visual marvel is nestled within a custom aluminum alloy frame that contours to the user’s face.

Apple has also considered users with vision correction, requiring them to purchase ZEISS Optical Inserts to ensure visual fidelity and eye-tracking accuracy. The headset’s Light Seal is available in various shapes and sizes, along with flexible straps and a headband in multiple sizes.

To guarantee a flawless fit for every Vision Pro sold, Apple plans to launch with appointment-only in-store promotions in select U.S. locations, eventually expanding nationwide and to international markets. Vision Pro will initially be available in specific U.S. locations in early 2024 before reaching all 270 retail stores.

Customers will need to make an appointment for in-store assistance with the headset’s fitting. When booking an appointment, buyers will be expected to provide their vision prescription for lens inserts, if applicable.

Additionally, Apple is developing an iPhone app and a physical machine to scan customers’ heads for accessory sizing when purchasing the headset online.

Apple used a similar approach during the Apple Watch launch in 2015. However, insiders believe the headset’s launch will be the company’s most “complex debut” ever, as it involves training salespeople, educating customers on usage, and managing supply chain logistics, including headset units, accessories, and optional prescription lenses.

Apple’s slow Vision Pro rollout will commence in the U.S. in early 2024, reaching international markets later in the year. When the headset does venture beyond the U.S., it will initially be available in the UK and Canada before expanding to Asia and Europe.
